Questions

Frequently asked questions about eating in Europe

Which European cities are best for food?

Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon, Naples, Bologna, Istanbul and San Sebastián are among the best, each for different dishes and ways of eating.

Do I need to book restaurants in Europe?

For dinner at popular places, especially on Friday and Saturday, yes. Lunch, bakeries, markets and tapas bars rarely need a booking.

What time do Europeans eat dinner?

It varies: around 7pm in the north, 8 to 9pm in France and Italy, and 9 to 10pm in Spain. Each guide gives the local times.

How do I avoid tourist-trap restaurants?

Walk a street or two away from the main sights, skip menus with photos in many languages, and look for places full of locals at local hours.

Is tipping expected in European restaurants?

Less than in the US. Service is often included; rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent for good service is normal. Each guide has the local custom.
